News: Judge approves Hard Rock Park auction

Posted at 8:47 PM EST (0147 GMT)

Nov. 20th, 2008 -- A Delaware judge today approved plans for Hard Rock Park to auction off the property and assets in part or in whole on December 15.

The park has set $35 million as the minimum bid for the entire complex.  The bidders must prove they have enough money and experience to run the business, according to court documents filed in Delaware bankruptcy court.  The winning bidder must put down $3.5 million in cash for a down payment.

The $400 million park filed for bankruptcy in September.

Six Flags, somehow as bad as your purse is, pick up SFStL a B&M looper. Dorney could use a mine train, but oh wait, they have Hydra.
If someone wants to pick up the whole place - cool. If not, I hope some of the park pins kick back to the restaurants.

I'm pretty sure bidding will go way above 35 Million. Thats just the starting bid and i'm sure a few parties are intrested so bidding should go pretty high.

It might not go for 400 Million but it should come close. I personally would have starting the bidding at $200 million.

Wow. This had to have been one of the shortest-lived major theme parks in history. Something in the back of my mind told me that it wouldn't last long, but I'm a little surprised that it went under this quickly.

Blame it on the bad economy, blame it on poor management, or whatever...it's just a horrible time right now for theme parks and amusement parks everywhere. Enjoy all of them while they're still around and functioning. With a few exceptions, if a park isn't owned by either Six Flags, Cedar Fair, Universal or Disney, then the clock is ticking. Just like the Great Depression ended the first golden age of the rollercoaster, I think this year's economic meltdown may spell the end of the coaster's second golden age. That's just me. I dunno. I'm just blabbing my concerns.

I wasn't surprised at all, sadly.

What went wrong with this park is two things.

MARKETING!!! They never did any! They never even marketed out of Myrtle Beach. If they did a national campaign, they would have had a lot more patrons this year.

Ticket prices is another gripe I heard this year. For the price of parking and admission, it wasn't worth what was in the park. There weren't enough rides to keep people busy. If they would have lowered their ticket prices, more people would show.

In all honesty, whoever was on the board of directors needs a lesson in business management and a slap to the back of the head.

They did run TV ads in the Charlotte area. I thought they were rather goofy and cheap looking to be such a big park.

Like IOA doing ads on a home movie camera or something.

We were there in May on a Tuesday I think, and we had ridden almost everything in the park within about 2.5 hours. The place was dead.

It was a nice park though.

I don't see the entire complex for going anywhere near the $00 million they shelled out.. Poor economy and location, I think the land will possibly used for something else, rides might be sold off.

Valleyfair could use LZTR... still would rather have an invert or floorless though.

I want LAGOON (Farmington, Utah) to get LZTR but then again, I just want LAGOON to have a taller coaster than its tallest, 110 foot Wicked! [SAD!!!! :( ]

Like James, I am not surprised by this at all. I do not see it being sold to just one business entity, but the harsh reality will soon set in that the park have to fold and they sell everything separately. It was just a badly planned park and the marketing of it did not help one bit. The economy is a sorry excuse to use when you know your top management screwed up.

Well, that was a waste of $400 million.

The economy is tight but it's not as bleak as many want to admit. Parks did very well this year. Those parks that rely on locals and then major tourism later did very well. HRP had too high a prices to be a worth while local park expecially with family kingdom right there.

There are chains interested in HRP mostly Foreign. they will not sell it off in peaces until they try and sell it off in a whole. I'm sure some one will do it. remove the Hark Rock, that's 2.5 million in costs a year alone. Might get a more generic Music World Name so most of the Music themeing could stay. Might see a few of the coasters renamed to remove the need for naming rights.

The concept is the biggest reason it failed.

Dick Kinzel came out and said he is not looking at HRP because the price tag was too high.

That would have been intresting if CF would have bought the park if the price was right.

I knew something was wrong when I visited the park on a Saturday afternoon in July. It was dead! Family Kingdom was PACKED.
Hard Rock Park is awesome but it's not for everyone. If you want to visit the park just get credits then you are wasting your time. You really have to take it all in, especially if you are a rock and roll fan.

I had a blast and didn't mind spending the money. I easily spent over $100 and didn't have a problem with it. I NEVER spend that much in an amusement park. I felt it was worth it. I mean it's coasters and rock and roll! What's not to like? Actually I visited just for the rock and roll thing. The coasters were just a bonus. :) It was worth the 8 hour trip!

The employees were some of the nicest people I ever met, especially the lady I talked to at customer relations. I NEVER go to customer relations unless I am highly ticked off or VERY pleased. She was actually shocked that I was giving kudos to the park. She said she was used to people coming in complaining. I asked "Why on earth would people complain about this place? It's awesome!" She said "People come in here expecting a Disney World or Cedar Point. We are a rock and roll park!"

I couldn't have said it better. ;) I really hope the best for the park. It's highly underrated. I am glad I got to see it, considering I am one of the ten people on earth that actually loved it.
